"Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) dedicated his 'Cien Sonetos de Amor' to his wife, Matilde, and it remains among the world's most revered collections of love poems. I read these beautiful poems constantly and often to my classes at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. Among these one hundred poems is the gorgeous sonnet, 'Ya eres mía'.
This choral/piano setting of 'Ya eres mía' joins my previous a cappella composition on a Neruda text, "Soneto de la Noche," from my choral cycle, 'Nocturnes'. A suggestion for programming would be to do the two together, starting with the 'Soneto'.
The choral setting of 'Ya eres mía' was premiered under the baton of the distinguished British conductor, Suzi Digby (Lady Eatwell) OBE, and recorded on CD by The Chamber Choir of Europe, conducted by Nicol Matt, on "Canticles: The Choral Music of Morten Lauridsen." A mixed duet version has been recorded by Jeremy Huw Williams and Caryl Hughes with pianist Paula Fan on the CD 'Prayer - The complete Songs of Morten Lauridsen'.
I extend my deep appreciation to each of these outstanding musicians for their superb artistry and to Dana Gioia for his marvelous translation of Neruda's sonnet." (Morten Lauridsen)
